Smith Optics launched their first road helmet at the 2014 Press Camp and it made quite a fine impression on the attending media and industry folks.
Hot on the heel's of last year's Forefront MTB offering, Smith focused on the road market and brings us now the Overtake. The goal for this product was ventilation, aerodynamics and protection, built around their integrated proprietary technology AEROCORE™ construction featuring Koroyd®. But what is Koroyd? It is an open cell construction that absorbs energy, allows cool air in, and lets hot air from the head escape. The technology is patented.
This matte green is one of twelve different color offerings. That wide of an offering is also fairly unique as most brands carry 4 or 5 color options.
Word has it that this new Smith Overtake road helmet has some very fine good aero numbers, that were very close to the Specialized Evade, a leader in that field. Smith had consulted Len Brownlie for that matter. But Smith proudly boasts of awesome cooling numbers too.
On this neon pink Overtake you can see how the Smith Optics glasses can rest when not in use. The newer Arena and Asana glasses with shorter earpieces will fit even more snug.

The glossy white one with the neon green Koroyd will be tested here for a while and it has already gotten quite a few looks and inquiries.

This sample sheet of Koroyd shows what happens with the material in an impact. It clearly shows that it has been compromised, we however were unable to learn how much of an impact was experienced here.
Weight for the helmet was given as 250 grams, and the MSRP matches that number too. So for $250 you can have an Overtake too. Some of the models are also available with a MIPS® multi-directional impact protection system liner, and those retail for $310. The Overtake will be available in late fall is the word.
