Sam Appleton rode away from his chasers with a 2:05:41 bike split and Ellie Salthouse ran off from her rivals with a 1:22:26 half marathon to seize victory at Ironman 70.3 Los Cabos.

Appleton combined a race-best 24:32 swim, a race-best 2:05:41 bike split and a 2nd-fastest 1:15:50 run to finish in 3:48:43 with a 4:46 margin of victory over home country favorite Mauricio Mendez and 8:59 over 3rd place finisher Joe Gambles of Australia.

The win adds to Appleton’s 2018 record which includes wins at Santa Rosa 70.3 and Geelong 70.3, 4th at St. George 70.3, and 6th at Ironman 70.3 Worlds.

Salthouse combined a women’s-best 28:23 swim, a women’s 2nd-fastest 2:23:46 bike split and a women’s-fastest 1:22:26 half marathon to finish in 4:17:36 with a 4:25 margin of victory over fellow Aussie Carrie Lester and 7:12 over 3rd-place woman Heather Wurtele of Canada.

Salthouse’s victory comes after a win at Boulder 70.3, 2nd at Pucon 70.3, and 4th at Dubai 70.3.
