New Zealander Bevan Docherty out-biked Canadian Brent McMahon and Reno, Nevada’s Liz Lyles outran red-hot Ironman 70.3 star Heather Jackson to win the men’s and women’s titles at Ironman 70.3 Boise.

Docherty, coming off wins at Ironman New Zealand and the Taupo half, a 2nd at the Columbia Triathlon and a 3rd at the Rev3 Quassy half, had a hard-fought duel with Canadian Brent McMahon which began with a virtual tie at 24:37 and 24:39 swims behind Josh Amberger’s 23:49 split. Docherty biked to the lead with a race-best 2:10:23 split that put 1:27 on McMahon but left him tied with Amberger. On the run, Docherty’s race-best 1:15:20 split was 20 seconds better than McMahon and left him with a 1:41 winning margin ahead of the Canadian at the finish. Amberger, ran 1:19:20, holding on for 3rd place, 4:14 behind Docherty’s 3:52:55 winning time.

Lyle and Jackson began the women’s race in a similar duel. Jackson emerged from the water in 30:44 and Lyles in 30:50, behind Malaika Homo (28:21) and Oleysa Prystayko (30:40) and just ahead of Erin Green (30:52).

Jackson took off on the bike, posting a race-best 2:27:59 split that was precisely 3 minutes better than Lyles. On the run, Jackson was well off her recently dominating form, which included a recent 1:17 in a 70.3 triathlon. The best Jackson could muster this day was a 1:31:23, which gave away 7:45 to Lyles and, with that deficit, the race. At the finish, Lyles prevailed with a 4:28:37 clocking, 4:05 better than Jackson. Uli Bromme of Boulder, Colorado finished 3rd professional in 4:42:07.
