Cameron Dye and Sarah Haskins won today’s men’s and women’s titles at the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon in Dallas, Texas thus earning $15,000 apiece. With their race victories, Dye and Haskins also wrapped up the 2012 Toyota Challenge Series titles and the $60,000 checks that are awarded to the champions.

Dye closed fast in the series, duplicating his Toyota Challenge win at Los Angeles last weekend.

The Men

Dye, the Boulder, Colorado star who has become master of the non-drafting Olympic distance triathlon, combined a 2nd-fastest 18:40 swim, a race-best 54:29 bike split to open up a big enough lead to hold off the field with a 10th-fastest 35:00 run. Dye finished in 1:50:04 with a 44-seconds margin of victory over runner-up Ben Collins of Chicago, Illinois and 2:24 over 3rd-place finisher Hunter Kemper of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dye edged Collins by 12 seconds on the swim, 55 seconds on the bike leg and gave back just 11 seconds to Collins on the run to earn his series-clinching victory. By contrast, 4-time Olympian Kemper gave 3 seconds on the swim but surrendered 4:26 on the bike and took back just 2:08 on the run on his way to 3rd place overall.

Dylan McNeice of New Zealand posted the fastest swim – 18:38 – on his way to an 11th place finish and Dye nailed down the fastest bike split. Chris Foster of Redondo Beach, California, put himself into a deep hole with a 21:45 swim and 57:11 bike split but managed to advance to 5th overall with the day’s best run – 31:49.

The Women

Haskins led out of the swim in 23:44, 2 seconds ahead of Lauren Brandon, 56 seconds ahead of Alicia Kaye, 1:30 ahead of Annabel Luxford and 1:32 ahead of Lauren Goss and Erin Jones. After giving away another 14 seconds to Haskins in the first transition, Kaye took the lead with a race-fastest 1:01:02 split that gave her a 15 seconds lead on Haskins.

Haskins then wrapped up the race and the series titles with a 2nd-fastest 36:57 run split that was 28 seconds better than Kaye and brought her to the finish in 2:05:17 with a 17-seconds margin of victory over runner-up Kaye and 2:42 on Lauren Goss, who closed fast with a race-best 36:06 run to take 3rd overall.
