Helle Frederiksen of Denmark and Pablo Dapena Gonzalez of Spain outran their pursuers to take the gold at the ITU Long Distance Worlds in Odense, Denmark.
Frederiksen led the women's swim by 3 seconds, fell 4 seconds back of Annabel Luxford of Australia after the bike leg, then unleashed a women's-fastest 1:56:27 split for the 30 kilometer run to finish in 5:49:04 with a 2:18 margin of victory over Barbara Riveros of Chile and 6:43 over 3rd place finisher Luxford.
Frederiksen thus improved on her runner-up finish last year at the ITU Long Distance World championship in Penticton, British Columbia. Frederiksen, age 37, took her first ITU World Championship to go with 8 Ironman 70.3 wins, the world’s fastest women’s time at the 70.3 distance – 3:55:50 – a 27th at the 2012 London Olympics, and a win at the 2014 Hy-Vee Championship.
Dapena overcame a 2 seconds deficit after the swim and a 36 seconds deficit after the bike leg with a by-far best 1:47:39 run to finish in 5:19:30 with a 2:43 margin of victory over Ruedi Wild of Switzerland and 27 over 3rd place finisher Marko Albert of Estonia.
The win was 30-year-old Dapena Gonzalez’s career best, coming after a win at last year’s Spanish Long Distance Triathlon National Championship and a runner-up finish at the ESP Triathlon National Championship.
