Cancun, Mexico, September 23: Oscar Galindez (ARG) and Tyler Stewart (USA) won the 2007 Ironman 70.3 Cancun event. Galindez proved to be the strongest runner among the men, and Stewart used her bike prowess on her way to victory.

Luke McKenzie (AUS) and defending champion Simon Lessing (UK) were first out of the water and out on the rainy bike course. They were eventually caught by David Thompson (USA), Paul Ambrose (AUS) and Richie Cunningham (AUS) and from then on stayed pretty much together as a group until T2. Once on the run, Thompson, McKenzie, Cunningham and Galindez started to gap Lessing, but it was Thompson’s move at about 4 miles that would eventually split the group. Galindez though was the one who made the decisive move about 6 miles into the run and he would not have to look back after that. Thompson finished second, and McKenzie finished third.

In the women’s race, Stewart had some catching up to do after the swim, and would chase Abigail Bayley (UK) for a good part of the bike ride. Once Stewart caught Bayley, she quickly gained a few more minutes and carried them into T2. No one was able to touch Stewart on the run and she crossed the finish line with a 7 minute advantage. Bayley held on for second place and Laura Tingle (USA) finished third.
