Tamara Gomez Garrido of Spain won her first World Cup and David Hauss of France finally won at his favorite venue at the Mooloolaba World Cup Saturday.

Women

Simone Ackermann of New Zealand led the 750-meter swim in 10:10, followed by Ashleigh Gentle of Australia, Renee Tomlin of the U.S. and Natalie Van Voevorden of Australian in 10:11, Mari rabie of South Africa in 10:12, and a thick crowd within 10 seconds including Amelie Kretz of Canada, Tamara Gomez Garrido of Spain, Lisa Perterer of Austria, Paula Findlay of Canada and Sarah Anne-Brault of Canada.

Leaving T2, Anel Radford of South Africa led, followed by Brault, Findlay and Lisa Perterer of Austria with Gomez Garrido, Ashleigh Gentle and Kretz. not far behind. On the first lap of the run, Gomez Garrido and Kretz broke into the lead, with a chase group consisting of Renee Tomlin and Jessica Broderick of the U.S., Charayron, Perterer and Gentle running in a pack 20 meters back.

Midway through the 4-lap, 5k run, Gomez Garrido stretched the lead to 30 meters, followed by Charayron, Perterer, Broderick. At the finish, Gomez Garrido prevailed for her first World Cup victory, thanks to a race-best 16:45 run that brought her to the finish in 1:01:42 with a 4 seconds margin on Kretz, who ran 16:51, and 19 seconds on Ashleigh Gentle who ran 17:05 to rake the final spot on the podium.

Jessica Broderick of the U.S ran 17:04 to take 4th, 2 seconds back of Gentle and Lisa Perterer of Austria ran 17:08 to place 5th. 23 seconds back of the winner. Charayron ran 17:11 to finish 6th, 25 seconds back of Gomez Garrido.

Prior to this breakthrough victory, Gomez Garrido’s career highlights include an 18th at the 2015 Abu Dhabi WTS race last week, a 3rd at the Havana CAMTRI Sprint Triathlon and a 6th at the 2014 Cozumel ITU Triathlon World Cup.

“I’m very happy for the win today. It was very important for me, last year I was injured all season and I couldn’t really race. So this is a great start to me, and I’m very happy because I’m trying to qualify for the Olympic Games so it’s very important to me,” said Gomez Garrido.

Men

Peter Kerr of Australia led the swim, followed by Tony Dodds of New Zealand, David Hauss of France, Tommy Zaferes of the U.S., Ben Shaw of Ireland and Pierre Le Corre of France.

Zafers led the bike out of T1, followed by Ben Shaw with a large chase group 10 seconds behind. By halfway, a 10-man lead group sorted itself out led by Jake Birtwhistle and Cam Good of Australia and followed by Zaferes, Shaw, Hauss, Ben Kanute and Greg Billington of the U.S., Dodds, Kerr, Le Corre and Michael Lori of Canada.

On the third lap, Tom Bishop of Great Britain and Luciano Taccone of Argentina worked their way to the front and made a break that gave them a 20 seconds lead when they hit T2.

On lap 2 of the run, Bishop left Taccone, but Hauss was coming on fast and passed the Brit on lap 3 and never looked back. Soon, Birtwhistle zoomed by Bishop., followed by Rom Darmon of Israel. Finishing fast, Vicente Hernandez of Spain grabbed the final spot on the podium, and Tony Dodds took 4th.

The win marks a breakthrough at his favorite course. Starting in 2009, Hauss finished 4th, 6th, 3rd, 3rd, and 4th before his dominant win today.

“It’s really my best race, it’s been like seven years I’m looking for this victory. Today I got the win and it’s perfect,” said Hauss.
