Gossage, Tungesvik win Norseman Xtreme

Women

Lucy Gossage of Great Britain, an Ironman star in her first attempt at the legendarily challenging Norseman Xtreme triathlon, topped nearest rival Flora Colledge by nearly 30 minutes but missed a women’s race record by 11:02. Gossage combined a 57:31 swim in the cold waters of the fjord, a women’s–best 5:58:59 split for the hellaciously hilly bike leg, and women’s-fastest 4:28:32 marathon that finishes with a 10 kilometer, a mile-high climb over ankle-snapping rocks that concluded atop the Gaustatoppen summit.
.
Gossage’s race time of 1:27:12 missed the women's race record of 11:16:10 set by Mette Peterson set in 2018.

“Norseman did not disappoint,” wrote Gossage in a Facebook post. “A real experience race. Simply stunning. Painful in a very different way to Ironman. My parents were simply amazing. Try an extreme triathlon next time. You definitely won’t regret it.”

Men

Hans Christian Tungesvik of Norway topped three-time Norseman Xtreme champion Allan Hovda after a fierce race-long battle. After the two men emerged from the swim in a 51:05 tie, Tungesvik earned 8 seconds in transition, a 3:03 advantage with a race-best 5:13:08 bike split and added 10 more seconds to his lead with a better second transition making for a 3:21 lead starting the run. On the intense scramble up the steep, rocky Gaustatoppen incline in the final 10 kilometers, Hovda gained back 2:08 with a race-best 3:51:29 marathon, but fell 1:12 short of a 4th victory.

Tungesvik fell 7:37 short of the men’s race record set by Lars Christian Vold of Norway in 2017.
