Jackson, Reed prevail at Coeur d’Alene 70.3

Heather Jackson of the U.S. and Tim Reed of Australia won Ironman 70.3 Coeur d’Alene.

Women

Jackson overcame a 3:32 deficit after the swim to Haley Chura of the U.S. with a women’s-best 2:21:55 bike split that that brought her first into T2 with a 43 seconds lead on Heather Wurtele of Canada, 1:07 on Mirinda Carfrae of Australia and 1:33 on Melanie McQuaid of Canada.

Five miles into the run, Jackson extended her lead to 1:21 over Carfrae, 3:29 on Wurtele and 3:54 on McQuaid.

After a women’s-fastest 1:20:09 run, Jackson finished in 4:12:58 with a 1:40 margin of victory over Carfrae (1:20:23 run split) and 7:32 over 3rd place finisher Wurtele (1:26:42 run).

With her victory, Jackson continues a string of successes which includes a win last November at Ironman Arizona and a win this year at Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga.

Men

After a 3rd-best 25:00 swim split, Tim Reed sustained a 1:52 deficit to swim leader Josh Amberger. After a 4th-best 2:08:21 bike split. Reed stood 5th at T2, behind Amberger who led Sam Appleton by 7 seconds, Andrew Talansky by 9 seconds, Matt Hanson by 1:59, Reed by 2:00 and Jackson Laundry by 2:01.

Halfway through the 13.1-mile run leg, Amberger led Appleton by 33 seconds, Reed by 45 seconds, Laundry by 1:21 and Hanson by 2:10.

At that point, Reed surged and put the screws on his rivals. At 8 miles, Amberger’s lead slimmed to 11 seconds over Reed and 14 seconds on Appleton. At 10 miles, Reed passed for the lead and harbored a 7 seconds lead on Amberger and 17 on Appleton.

After a race-best 1:11:18 half marathon, Reed finished in 3:47 53 with a 15 seconds margin of victory over Appleton (1:13:31 run split) and 55 seconds on 3rd place finisher Amberger (1:14:13 run).

Reed, the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, has been busy and consistent this year as he was 5th at Ironman New Zealand, 4th at Davao 70.3, 2nd at Ironman Australia, 3rd at the Asia-Pacific 70.3 Championship and 1st at Subic Bay 70.3.
