Jacobs, Tisseyre take Philippines 70.3

Australian Pete Jacobs broke away from defending champion Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand on the run and Magalia Tisseyre of Canada did the same to 2006 Ironman Hawaii champion Michellie Jones of Australia to win the Cobra Philippines Ironman 70.3 Sunday.

Jacobs emerged from the swim with an 11-seconds margin on Bozzone, gave back 5 seconds on the bike and sealed the deal with a 1:21:15 run that put 7 minutes 13 seconds on Bozzone. At the line, Jacobs’ final 3:58:41 time bested Bozzone by precisely the superiority of his run. Frederik Croneberg of Sweden took third in 4:14:36, with 2006 ITU short course Duathlon champion Leon Griffin of Australia falling to 4th in 4:17:30 thanks to a heat-exhausted 1:39:27 run.

"This race was a trial run for Hawaii - the way I want to race, the way I want to feel, the heat and humidity were no problem, despite coming straight from Sydney winter, and the way I am training is going perfectly well. Bring on Kona," said Jacobs to slowtwitch. "It is also very special to come back to Philippines Ironman 70.3 after an average preparation and race here last year, and it is my favorite 70.3. I am already looking forward to defending my title here next year."

In a battle almost as hot as the temperatures, Magali Tisseyre of Canada was in a virtual match race with Michellie Jones of Australia through the swim (27:12 to 27:04) and bike (2:22:10 to 2:22:24) before the 29-year-old Canadian broke it open over the 40-year-old Australian on the run – 1:33:49 to 1:36:02.

At the finish Tisseyre’s 4:27:01 bested Jones’ 4:29:23 half marathon by 2 minutes 22 seconds. Rachael Paxton of Australia took 3rd in 4:42:38, with top age group woman Monica Torres of the Philippines taking 4th in 5:00:19.
