Salthouse, Ascenco conquer Coquimbo 70.3

Ellie Salthouse of Australia dominated the pro women and Santiago Ascenco of Brazil edged home country favorite Martin Ulloa of Chile to win Ironman 70.3 Coquimbo.

Women

Salthouse bolted out front with a 26:38 swim split that gave her a 2:04 lead on Romina Palacio of Argentina, 2:06 on Pamela Tastets of Chile and 4:13 on Amanda Wendorff of the U.S.

Halfway through the 90 kilometer bike leg that challenged riders with 1200 meters of climbing, Salthouse stretched her lead to 7 minutes over on Wendorff, 7:51 on Tastets and 9:09 on Sarah Piampiano of the U.S.

After a women’s-best 2:32:51 bike split, Salthouse led Wendorff by 8:21, Piampiano by 8:47, Tastets by 11:53, and Palacio by 16:40.

After a women’s 2nd-fastest 1:23:51 half marathon, Salthouse finished in 4:28:28 with a 6:46 margin of victory over Piampiano, who posted the women's-best 1:22:02 run, and 16:16 over 3rd place Amanda Wendorff.

Tastets took 4th, 2:33 behind Wendorff, and Palacio finished 5th, 54 seconds behind Tastets.

The victory added to Salthouse’s excellent 2019 season which includes wins at Cozumel 70.3 and Challenge Cancun, 2nd place at Geelong 70.3 and 3rd at Oceanside 70.3.

Men

Vicente Trewhela of Chile led the men’s wave with a 23:35 split that gave him a 47 seconds lead on Martin Ulloa and 2:02 over Felipe Van De Wyngard – making a 1-2-3 Chilean sweep of the swim.

Halfway through the bike leg, Trewhela opened a 2 minutes lead over a chase trio including Santiago Ascenco of Brazil, Van de Wyngard and Ulloa.

After a men’s second-fastest 2:17:26 bike split, Trewhela led the field into T2 by 1:54 over Ascenco, 2:40 over Van De Wyngard and Ulloa, 6:50 over Nicolas Saez, 6:52 over Francisco Catalan and 7:30 over Travis McGrath.

Early on way to a race-best 1:15:50 run split, Ascenco passed Trewhela for the lead and was not threated as he finished in 4:04:27 with a 2:06 margin of victory over Ulloa (1:17:00 run split) and 6:57 over 3rd place finisher Van De Wyngard )1:21:52 run) .

This was Ascenco’s third win of 2019 after 70.3 victories at Bariloche and Pucon.
