So much for Summer

On the morning of a planned Ironman 70.3 contest, Zell Am See-Kaprun race officials canceled the bike leg due to severe weather conditions with snow obstructing parts of the road course. With 25 minutes before the start, the water temperature was 70 degrees Fahrenheit, the air temperature was 46 degrees Fahrenheit and competitors loaded up with cold weather gear on the rarest of summer days on the triathlon circuit.

When the impromptu duathlon was over, Laura Philipp of Germany topped Barbara Riveros of Chile by 1:53 and Michael Weiss edged fellow Austrian Andreas Giglmayr by 52 seconds in finish times well under 2 hours.

Women

Beatrice Weiss of Austria led the women's swim in 25:05 which gave her a 4 seconds lead on Anna-Lena Pohl of Germany, 45 seconds on Riveros, 2:36 on Tine Deckers of Belgium, 2:39 on Philipp, 3:23 on Romana Slavinec of Austria, 4:02 on Eva Wutti of Austria, and 4:03 on Alexandra Tondeur of Belgium.

After 12 kilometers of the run, Riveros took the lead by 6 seconds on Philipp, 2:48 on Tondeur, 3:01 on Pohl, 3:15 on Weiss, 3:41 on Deckers, and 4:03 on Wutti. At 15km of the run, Philipp passed Riveros and took a 52 seconds lead at 16km. With a swift 1:17:04 half marathon, Philipp finished in 1:47:03 with a 1:50 margin of victory over Riveros (1:20:41 run) and 3:27 over 3rd place finisher Alexandra Tondeur of Belgium, who closed with a women's second-fastest 1:18:55 run.

Men

Florian Angert of Germany led the men’s swim with a 23:18 split that gave him a 2 seconds lead on Manuel Küng of Switzerland and David Hanko of Hungary, 7 seconds on Italians Daniel Fontana and Alberto Casadei, 51 seconds on Giglmayr, and 54 seconds on Paul Reitmayr of Austria.

After 3km of the run, Küng took a short lead in Angert and Giglmayr. After 12km, Laszlo Tamai of Hungary took the lead by 9 seconds on Giglmayr with Weiss advancing to 3rd place.

Two kilometers later, the leaders shuffled the deck as Weiss seized the lead, with Giglmayr 2nd 17 seconds back and Tamai to 3rd, 54 seconds arrears.

After a sizzling fast 1:07:32 half marathon, Weiss broke the tape in 1:36:14 with a 52 seconds margin of victory over Giglmayr (1:10:42 run) and 2:12 over 3rd place finisher Tamai (1:11:10 run).
