Wild, Ryf win Klagenfurt 5i50

Swiss stars Ruedi Wild and Daniela Ryf won Klagenfurt 5i50 Sunday.

Wild overcame a 47-seconds deficit after the swim and 1:33 after the bike with a race-best 31:39 run to finish in 1:48:21 with a 32 seconds margin of victory over runner-up Josh Amberger of Australia and 1:07 over 3rd place finisher Clark Ellice of New Zealand.

Ryf combined an 8th-fastest 18:07 swim, a sizzling, race-best 1:02:18 bike split and a 3rd-fastest 36:42 run to finish in 2:00:12 with a 46-seconds margin of victory over runner-up Liz Blatchford of Great Britain and 2:30 over 3rd place finisher Erika Csomor of Hungary.

Ryf trailed Blatchford’s race-best 17:02 swim by 65 seconds, but surged to a lead of 1:35 after her superb bike split. Blatchford and Csomor made 38 seconds of inroads with their equal 36:04 run splits, but they both fell short of making any threat to Ryf’s dominant overall performance.

Blatchford performed well shortly after getting news that she, the third ranked British women triathlete, did not make the final spot on Great Britain’s Olympic triathlon team.

Defending champions Bertrand Billard of France and Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic finished 7th and 5th respectively.
