Wurtele edges Hering at Campeche 70.3

Women

Heather Wurtele of Canada overcame a 3:04 deficit after the swim with a dominating bike split to finish in 4:15:23 with a 53 seconds margin of victory over Jacalyn Hering of the U.S. and 11:54 over 3rd place finisher Lauren Brandon of the U.S.

Wurtele caught lead swimmer Brandon with 10 kilometers to go on the 90 km bike, as her 2:15:00 bike split was 4:32 faster than Brandon and gave the Canadian a 1:27 lead at T2 and a 6 minutes margin on Hering.

By 5k into the run, Wurtele expanded her lead to 4:40 over Brandon while Hering sliced her deficit to 5:03.

On her way to a women's-best 1:22:42 run split, Hering passed Brandon and chopped her gap to Wurtele to 2:25 after 16km While Hering was running at a 3:52 per kilometer pace and Wurtele kept steady at 4:06/km, the outcome was never in doubt. Wurtele finished her run in 1:27:52 with 53 seconds margin on Hering, who gave it her best with a 1:22:42 run.

Out of steam after her scintillating swim and decent bike, Brandon faded with a 1:37:58 run split to take 3rd place, 11:01 behind Hering.

Men

Michel Gonzalez of Mexico led the men’s swim with a 26:07 split that gave him 25 seconds lead on Frederik Van Lierde of Belgium, 45 seconds on Pieter Heemeryck of Belgium, 48 seconds on Ben Hoffman of the U.S., 2:03 on Ricardo Garcia Rivero of Mexico and Tayler Reid of New Zealand, and 2:10 on 2002 ITU World Champion Ivan Raña of Spain. Weiss trailed by 3:04.

After 52 kilometers of the bike leg, Van Lierde led by 1:30 on a three man pack including Heemeryck, Gonzalez and Hoffman. Weiss was slicing through the field and narrowed his deficit to 1:05, while Reid trailed by 3:34, Trevor Wurtele by 3:45 and Matt Hanson of the U.S. by 4:09.

After a 2:00:54 bike split, Van Lierde led into T2 by 2:29 over Weiss (2:00:25 bike split), 3:50 over Heemeryck, 4:02 over Hoffman, 5:43 over Gonzalez and 7:47 over Hanson.

After 5km of the run, Van Lierde held on to a 1:13 lead on Weiss, 1:42 on Heemeryck, 2:40 on Hoffman and 5:17 on Gonzalez.

With 5 km to go, Weiss took over the lead by 32 seconds over Heemeryck and 36 seconds on Van Lierde and 2:04 on Hoffman.

In the final 4km, Van Lierde faded badly and fell to 5th.

After a men’s-best 1:17:12 run, Weiss finished in 3:50:02 with a 1:27 margin of victory over Heemeryck (1:17:33 run), 2:46 on 3rd place finisher Hoffman (1:18:29 run), 5:26 on 4th place Hanson (1:17:29 run) and 8:13 on 5th place Van Lierde (1:27:24 run).
