General Info: Over two decades, Dr. McMahon has coached 100’s of people in clinics, camps and individually. Prior to this, Dr. McMahon competed in cycling and running races and had a successful career as a professional triathlete. He continues to train and compete in triathlons ranging from sprint to Ironman distances. In 2004, he won several triathlons including the USA Triathlon National Sprint Championships. In 2005, he was 7th in the Olympic Distance Age-Group World Championships (3rd American 40-44 yr.) and went under 10 hours at the Hawaii Ironman one week later. In 2006 he consistently placed in the top 3 of the races he competed in.
Coach McMahon received his Ph.D. (Biomedical Sciences (Physiology)) from the University of Hawaii. His doctoral research (Respiratory Muscle Endurance Training) was done in the Exercise Physiology Department at the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Recently, he has taught physiology as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Teacher’s College, Columbia University.
Dr. McMahon has coached the complete spectrum of endurance athletes from beginners to professional including two time Olympians, Brigitte McMahon - triathlon gold medalist in the 2000 Sydney Olympics (10th in Athens), and Reto Hug - eighth place finisher at the Sydney Olympics (European Champion & World Cup winner), along with other National Champions. In 2007, he coached the male Olympic distance World Champion (overall amateur) and the female Xterra World Champion (overall amateur). As an exercise physiologist and coach, Dr. McMahon draws upon his unique combination of experiences as a former professional triathlete with a doctorate in physiology, and 20 years coaching athletes of all abilities including successful Olympians, to help everyone he works with achieve their goals.
