Kemper started well with a 4th-best 15:42 swim but lost 1:26 to Cam Dye’s race-best 54:40 bike split and 20 seconds to a minute to a large pack of contenders. Whereupon the 39-year-old 4-time Olympian slashed through the field with a 2nd-fastest 30:56 run that brought him to the finish in 1:44:43 with a 18 seconds margin of victory over Swiss Olympian Ruedi Wild and 33 seconds over 3rd place finisher and multiple Olympian Brad Kahlefeldt of Australia.

The win marks the summit of Kemper’s long résumé of success at this big-money classic. The Colorado Springs resident was 17th in 2007, 6th while earning the final U.S. men’s Olympic slot in 2008, and 2nd in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
